The best of the west

THERE is a reason it's called 'The Hell of the West'.

Comprised of a two kilometre swim, an 80km bike ride and a 20km run, the annual Goondiwindi event is known as one of Australia's toughest triathlons.

For Dalby's Bronwyn Henschell, however, it was the culmination of months of training, resulting in second place.

"There was probably about 600 people split into different age groupe; there are a lot of elites there,” she said.

"I've just gone up into the 45-49 age group.”

"I probably did about two months of solid training, but in the 12 months since last time i haven't had any injuries or anything which is good.”

"In the months leading up to it, I was doing about 14-15 hours a week of training all together, I'd do some in the morning and nights before and after work, and I also try to have a rest day each week.”

"So I do a long ride and run on the weekend, and swimming about three times during the week...I start at about 4.15 in the morning to do a 60-70km bike ride before work.”

Ms Henschell, who also works as a teacher at Dalby State High School, said she would recommend triathlons to anybody interested in a challenge.

"I've been doing triathlons for maybe 20 years...one of my first races was because my sister convinced me to come with her,” she said.

"You're competing against yourself and pushing yourself to your limits to see how fast you can go.”

"I'd say the Dalby one is good because there's the 'Enticer', which is a shorter event and there are are no expectations, it's just about having a go...or the business house challenge is always good and you can go with a team.”
