Third person may be involved in rape

More DNA analysis will be undertaken in the case of two men accused of shocking abductions and rapes in Melbourne in the 1980s as a court heard a third man could be involved.

Craig William Minogue and Peter Michael Komiazyk's case was heard in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday for the second day of a committal hearing testing the strength of the evidence against them.

Victoria Police senior forensic biologist Kate Outteridge told the court more DNA analysis could be completed by January, after questioning from Komiazyk's lawyer Malcolm Thomas.

She was grilled about a sperm sample taken from the cervix, above the vagina, of one of the victims, which was collected at the time of the alleged crimes - almost 35 years ago.

The court heard two separate analyses concluded Minogue, 57, and Komiazyk, 63, were each 100 billion times more likely to be matches to the DNA sample than any other person.

A third person was also likely to have contributed to the DNA sample, Ms Outteridge said - but no third person has been charged.

Mr Thomas quizzed Ms Outteridge on the reliability of the DNA analysis.

"I say that my client is not a contributor to the DNA, and Mr Minogue could be," he said.

She agreed to undertake more processing.

The sperm sample came from one of two victims of the alleged offences in the mid-1980s.

Two women were allegedly abducted off the street and subjected to brutal treatment by multiple men.

On November 22, 1985, a woman was taken by force in South Yarra in Melbourne's south and indecently assaulted and raped, the court previously heard.

On March 26, 1986, another woman was taken by force in Nunawading in Melbourne's east and slapped, punched in the ribs, threatened, raped and sexually assaulted over two days.

Minogue and Komiazyk are each facing 38 charges stemming from the two incidents.

The committal hearing continues.
