OPINION: Thoughts with a man of the people

I AM writing this editorial not knowing how likeable Lockyer mayor Steve Jones battled through last night.

I only know that when I watched him collapse at the meeting I was at yesterday I knew he was in trouble.

I had just passed him a business card with my phone number so we could organise a chat after the elections.

When I signalled to all that the mayor was unwell Paul Pisasale immediately dialled 000.

While we can all prepare for emergencies you don't know how quickly you will react until you are confronted with one.

The mayor knew we couldn't wait even a few minutes to see if Steve Jones was okay.

Our emergency services arrived minutes later and started treating him.

It has been known for some time that Mayor Jones has been battling health issues.

Just last year he underwent a major heart operation.

It was thought at the time that he may not to stand for re-election.

When we contacted him a few months ago about standing again he said his health was alright and he was ready to tackle the mayor's job again.

He went on to say that he was confident he would be re-elected.

He first became mayor in 2004 and in that time has presided with distinction over two major disasters in his region.
