Tiny puppy rescued from drain after three hour ordeal

EVERY dog has its day and yesterday it was the turn of seven-week-old Maltese terrier Chloe as firefighters rescued her from an overflow drain.

It had crawled 42 metres through an underground sewerage pipe leaving rescuers the difficult job of extracting the puppy.

Firefighters tried three or four different techniques to coax the puppy out of the drain, including bringing food, bringing in the puppy's mother Bella and attempted to flush her out with water.

The fourth method finally did the trick.

Council plumbers were called in to feed a camera through the pipe and after 42 metres she was found.

The puppy was eventually pushed out by the camera.

The smallest puppy in the litter was reunited with its mother and four brothers and sisters.

Owner Tammy Dymmock was relieved to have her puppy rescued.

She said the puppy was uninjured and would be having a warm bath to recover from the ordeal.

Highfields Fire Station auxiliary firefighter Zachary Chimes was the hero of the day and eventually pulled the puppy free.

"It was quite satisfying to get the dog out because it felt like we kept taking a step back but we all prevailed in the end," he said.

"It was a team effort by the whole crew."
