THERE are flies, sticky floors, a potent smell and carpet ripped from the floors. However, a Wilsonton Heights mother was told her rental home was fine to live in.

Helena West and her four children have spent the past 10 days cramped into one bedroom at her mother's home, after raw sewage flooded their rental.

Ms West said it was around 11pm on March 23, when an overflow of sewage erupted from the toilet of the home and travelled into the bedrooms, along the hallway and into the living area.

"It was about 20 to 30cm high and the smell made you physically sick," she said.

"My kids just ran into the living room and we turned everything off at the walls.

"My youngest (child) Malakai was still sleeping in his room so we had to walk through it to grab him.

"We had to use all our linen to block it and we stayed in the living room."

The family has lost most of their possessions, including the entire contents of the children's bedrooms, furniture, clothing, PlayStations and more.

The property is looked after by First National Copas Newnham Property Services.

Ms West admitted she did not have insurance but was upset by the lack of help available.

The night her home flooded, she said she contacted her real estate's emergency maintenance hotline but could not get through.

The next day, she said the agency sent a plumber to the property and provided the family with one night's free accommodation.

Ms West said the plumber advised her the flooding could have been caused from a blocked sewer main.

She said a council worker also came to the home and declared it "unliveable" due to black water.

"I'm still paying rent for a home I'm not even living in," she said.

"I have three cats that are out at an emergency shelter in Kingsthorpe.

"I also had to pay for a skip bin and removalists."

Ms West said the bedroom carpets were ripped from the house two days ago and her property manager advised the family it was safe to return.

"I think it is against a health and safety regulation," she said.

"I am not comfortable bringing my children back into this home.

"I would like things replaced like the carpets and floors and the house cleaned.

"I don't think I should be paying rent during this and I just want things to be done so we can return"

A spokeswoman from First National Copas Newnham Property Services said the property was in the middle of an insurance claim for the damage and would not comment further.
