Drug user comes clean to police, lands himself in court

A MAN who was found with a stash of drugs in his car following a random police stop has narrowly avoided serving actual time behind bars.

John Robert Allan Hickson, 27, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Ipswich District Court to two count of possessing a dangerous drug.

He also pleaded guilty to having a mobile phone which had been used in the commission of a crime.

Crown prosecutor Noel Needham told the court police officers conducting patrols pulled over Hickson's car on October 1, 2015 in North Booval.

He said the officers noticed Hickson was acting nervously and asked if he had anything in the car he wanted to declare.

"He told officers he had cannabis in the vehicle which then allowed them to perform a search," he said.

"During the search they also located a clip seal bag containing methamphetamine and a mobile phone.

"He admitted to officers he was planning to pass the methamphetamines on to a friend.

"He also admitted he was planning to sell the cannabis to an associate."

Mr Needham said Hickson made full and frank admissions to officers but did not participate in a formal interview.

He said police located 250g of cannabis and 4g on methamphetamine during the search of the vehicle.

Defence barrister Stephen Kissick said Hickson had next to no criminal history and was not a drug user or addict.

He said he simply had made a poor decision in telling friends he could source the drugs for them.

"It was totally out of character and was really a poor lapse in judgement," he said.

"He suffers from Scheuermann's disease which leaves him in constant pain."

Judge Greg Koppenol told Hickson he would have served actual custody if it was not for his admissions to police.

He sentenced Hickson to 12 months behind bars but wholly suspended the sentence for and operation period of two years.

"This is your one opportunity," he said.

"You do not get many opportunities in life so do not muck it up."
