Tragedy at Chinchilla Weir after man drowns

A MAN drowned at Chinchilla Weir yesterday afternoon after getting in trouble while swimming.

Chinchilla Police confirmed the 71-one-year-old man was swimming with another man at the spillway of the weir when he was observed getting into difficulties by witnesses at around 5pm on Sunday.

Bystanders at the scene reportedly rushed to attend to the man after seeing him disappear beneath the surface of the weir.

"Two (men) have located the male and commenced CPR on him after pulling him from the water," officer in charge of Chinchilla Police, Sergeant Gerard Brady said.

"The bystanders continued CPR until QAS arrived, however the (man) was declared deceased at Chinchilla Hospital."

Sgt Brady said there would be a coroner's report into the man's death but at this stage the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
