Tyrrell former-suspect arrested on other child sex offences

A FORMER person of interest in the disappearance of toddler William Tyrrell has been arrested over unrelated allegations of historical child sex offences.

Whitegoods repairman Bill Spedding was arrested on Wednesday afternoon at his Bonny Hills home, near Port Macquarie on the NSW Mid North Coast.

He was driven to Port Macquarie Police Station to be questioned about the alleged sexual assault of two girls, aged three and six, in Sydney in 1987.

Police stressed the arrest was unrelated to the Tyrrell case.

Spedding, 63, was first interviewed over the three-year-old boy's disappearance in January.

At that time, forensics teams searched his home and his Laurieton pawnbroker business, using an excavator to dig up his yard and draining a septic tank.

A number of items were seized, but he was not arrested and no charges were made.

William went missing from his grandmother's home in Kendall in September last year.

Spedding became a person of interest after it was revealed he visited William's grandmother's home to provide a repair quote days before the child vanished from her yard.

William was not at the home when Spedding visited. The child went missing from the property four days later.

Spedding was believed to have been called back to the home to fix a faulty washing machine on the day William went missing.

He has denied being booked on that day. Search teams failed to turn up any leads in nearby bushland last month.

Police released a statement saying an investigation was continuing into the disappearance.
