A FEROCIOUS hailstorm outside of Blackwater in western Queensland has been captured by a driver video as he and a passenger braced for the violent weather.

Dion Thorpe was "just out of Blackwater" when he stopped the car as the storm approached.

In the video he can be heard saying he had never seen a storm as bad as this.

"Thought the car was going to get blown away," he wrote on Facebook.

"Hail took paint off the driver's side. Almost golfball sized.

It also broke one of his Daihatsu Feroza's mirrors.

Higgins Storm Chasing wrote on its Facebook page that Dion was likely trapped in a supercell thunderstorm for the six minutes of the video, with winds likely blowing at more than 100kmh.

"Looks more like being in a cyclone than an arvo storm," Jeff Higgins said.
