WALLABY RESCUE: Swamp wallaby rescued 1km off coast

A SWAMP wallaby found paddling a kilometre off the shore of Arrawarra Beach has been rescued by a boat-load of Southern Cross University marine science students.

Laura Sanchez Peregrin was onboard when her fellow National Marine Science Centre divers spotted the worn-out marsupial swimming through the ocean on Monday morning.

"Launched the tinny from Arrawarra Beach and headed north," she posted on Instagram.

"We had just left the bay when to our surprise we see an unusual shape in the water, which turns out to be a big wallaby!

"We approached him. The poor thing was exhausted."

The group scooped the wallaby into the boat and strung up his legs to stop his struggling, before dropping him back on the beach.

He hopped off to drier land after a short rest on the sand.

"It was a hot day so who could blame him for wanting to refresh himself!" Ms Sanchez Peregrin said.

"But he was way, way out.

"Weirdest thing I've seen in a loooong time."

Ms Sanchez Peregrin was not excited about the media spotlight the story has brought on her, but acknowledged it was a "cute little story".
