Warner, Khawaja to miss ODI tour of New Zealand

CRICKET: Usman Khawaja has been left out of Australia's one-day tour of New Zealand so that he can focus all his energy on the upcoming Test series in India.

David Warner is the other high profile star who won't travel to NZ next week; however, instead of heading to Dubai for red ball practice, he will take a rare chance to rest at home after a jam-packed year.

The two big changes mean Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch have been recalled to the one-day arena to open the batting in New Zealand.

Khawaja's omission from the one-dayers is a calculated move, given the fact he struggled in Sri Lanka last year to the point he was dropped for the third Test.

There are still lingering question marks over Khawaja's game in the sub-continent, despite the sheer dominance he has shown on home soil.

Khawaja, Matt Renshaw, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson, Jackson Bird, Ashton Agar and Steve O'Keefe will head to Dubai early on January 30 to maximise their preparation time on specially prepared sub-continental wickets at ICC headquarters.

For the likes of Khawaja and Renshaw it will be invaluable preparation being able to face Australia's four spinners on turning wickets.

Selection Chairman Trevor Hohns says the Khawaja decision offered an ideal opportunity to get Shaun Marsh back into international cricket before he re-joins the Test squad for India.

"With Usman heading to Dubai in the first group of players this provides Shaun with a chance to get back into international cricket following his injury earlier in the summer," said Hohns.

"David (Warner has had a very big summer and will benefit from a break in cricket, both mentally and physically.

"He will travel to Dubai in the second group of departures to coincide with those players arriving from the one-day series in New Zealand.

"This gives Aaron an opportunity to return to the side. His form in the Big Bash League has been very good and he has earnt his recall."

Players in the Australian ODI squad for New Zealand will all be unavailable for the Big Bash League final.

Australia: Steve Smith (capt), Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, James Faulkner, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa
