NOT many people give up their free time to tend to burial plots but, for Stephen and Anne Wunsch, caring for the Warra cemetery is just one way they keep community spirit alive.

The couple was honoured with the Western Downs Regional Council (WDRC) Citizen of the Year Award for Jandowae and District at the Warra Australia Day Celebration yesterday.

Councillor Donna Ashurt presented the award and said Mr and Mrs Wunsch were chosen because of their tireless efforts to preserve the Warra cemetery.

"They work very very hard on the cemetery ... and keep it looking lovely all the time, it's a big job and they keep it immaculate,” Cr Ashurt said.

"They also participate in sports and community groups and events run by the church.”

"They're very active across the whole of the district.”

Mr and Mrs Wunsch were heavily involved in the construction of the Memorial Bell Tower and donate much of their spare time to the Warra Racing Club.

Mrs Wunsch said while she felt honoured to receive the award, the satisfaction she felt from helping the community was a reward in itself.

"The award, to me, means community. It's nice to be recognised for our efforts but it is the collective contribution of many people that make this community a special place to live” she said.

Mr Wunsch said he was passionate about living in the district and keeping community spirit alive.

"We take a lot of pleasure from working with the community,” he said.

"Small towns are struggling and it is important to try and keep them alive ... it takes some time and effort but it's rewarded.”
