A RARE baby eastern black rhino has captured hearts all over the world with footage showing the curious newborn bonding with its mum.

The rhino was born on October 11 and staff at Blank Park Zoo in Iowa are celebrating the significant spectacle.

The two-horned species is critically endangered in the wild with only about 5000 left.

The zoo is a partner of the International Rhino Foundation and staff hoped the birth would help raise awareness of conservation for the species in Africa.

Zoo staff told America's ABC News the newborn, which does not yet have a name, was full of energy and very curious.
