Ratepayers ignore restrictions, council to patrol towns

CALLS for Dalby residents to abide by new water restrictions have been blatantly ignored, with the town's water usage spiking by 20 per cent since the new rules were introduced.

The Western Downs Regional Council has been forced to send patrols out through Dalby and Tara to catch ratepayers in the act of ignoring the new water restrictions.

On November 17, the council introduced 'Conservation water restrictions' which requires locals to restrict themselves to 300 litres of water per person, per day.

Dalby's water usage has increase by 20 per cent in the last month, with council confirming the town needs to decrease its usage by 25 per cent in order to abide by the newly erected "conservation" restrictions.

It was disappointing for Western Downs mayor Paul McVeigh to discover residents had ignored the calls to curb their water use.

"Dalby is currently consuming more water than we can produce and we are asking residents to cut back on their usage," Cr McVeigh said.

"Council is also taking measures to reduce water consumption in our parks and gardens and other facilities including utilising recycled water where possible.

"As hot and dry conditions continue across our region, we all need to be doing our bit to conserve water as part of our daily routine at home, at work, and when we're out and about in the region.

"We all need to ensure we are managing our water responsibly and I urge residents to visit Council's website and Facebook page for handy tips about how you can be more waterwise, as well as the latest on our region's water restrictions."
