What goes around comes around with old Orica lathe

ORICA has donated its original 25-year-old metal-turning lathe to the Gladstone Men's Shed.

Although the lathe is too large to put into the current Off St shed, it will go into storage ready for when the men get their own facility.

It's even more reason for the men to keep their fingers crossed after re-applying to the third round of the Gladstone Foundation grants to fund a new shed.

Shed president Gerry Graham said they were already bursting at the seams with members.

"We have about 65 on the books, but only 25 can fit at the one time," he said.

But he was very pleased with the lathe, which would help with many projects.

"What's great is that we have guys who used to work for Orica, QAL, etc, who have the skills to use it," he said.

The shed's lathe will then be donated elsewhere.

Orica's Matthew Adamson said his crew wanted to give the lathe to the men's shed.

"We see a lot of what they do in the community, some of the toys (they make) are played with by the children of our

workers," he said.

David Johnson worked at Orica for many years, and now finds the social side of the shed fun after retirement.

"It keeps you occupied," he said. "When you retire you don't talk to people like you used to."
