Wheatmen kick-off with Old Boys' Day

THE Dalby Wheatmen will be celebrating their history this weekend at the club.

While the current Wheatmen players begin the new season, players from years past will come together to honour the club.

Old Boys' Day at the Dalby Wheatmen is tomorrow afternoon and all past members of the club are invited to be at John Ritter Oval.

Dalby Wheatmen board member Scott Cosgrove said the day provided the perfect opportunity for the community to be at the game and supporting the club.

"A lot of people do not get the chance to come down and watch the team each week, so this day provides a pretty good excuse to watch the game,” Mr Cosgrove said.

"It is a celebration of all the old members getting together and reminiscing about the good times they had at the club.”

This weekend's fixture is the opening round of the Downs Rugby season and the Wheatmen are anticipating a massive year.

The A-grade team have won the last two Risdon Cups and will be out to make history by winning a third.

The B-grade side has made the last two grand finals and is hoping this year to secure the trophy.

Mr Cosgrove said the fact this weekend was the first game of the season made this year's Old Boys' Day more specials for the club.

"This weekend is the first step for our A-grade side going for another premiership so we want people to show their support and wear the club's colours,” he said.

"Any old boy who is wearing an old Dalby Wheatmen jersey will get in for free.”

Mr Cosgrove said the day was also a great fundraiser for the club and a financially successful day was always beneficial.

"The club needs everyone to help keep the club up and that includes our old boys and past members to help us out,” he said.

Dalby Wheatmen Old Boys' Day will begin at 1.30pm when the Dalby B-grade side faces the Toowoomba Bears.

Kick-off for the A-grade contest between the Dalby Wheatmen and Toowoomba Bears will be at 3pm.

The bar and canteen will be open to all patrons for drinks and food throughout the afternoon.
