Police hope dress ring can solve identity of mystery woman

A rustic gold dress ring may solve the mystery surrounding the identity of a frail elderly woman who was left outside a regional Queensland hospital more than two weeks ago.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 80s, was picked up from the side of the road in Mooloolah on the Sunshine Coast and taken to Nambour General Hospital on September 6 where she was left outside the entrance.

Police have since conducted multiple interviews with the man who dropped her off but he has not been able to shed light on her identity, Inspector Matt Robertson said.

"He's located her on the side of the road and dropped her off where he thought she could get some assistance. She was in a vulnerable situation, requiring medical attention," Mr Robertson said.

"She was found outside the hospital by people who have taken her inside."

When she arrived she was non-verbal and in need off medical attention but her health has improved considerably and she has since been moved to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

However, Insp Robertson said it had been "challenging" getting information from her and did not directly respond to a question asking if she thought she may know who she was.

"She's improving daily and getting her strength back, but we still need further inquiries to identify who she is," he said.

"She's been challenging in relation to her condition and it is improving and we are getting better communication channels with her."

Insp Robertson said they have investigated a number of leads provided by the public and have also contacted local RSL, aged facilities, shopping centres and doctors' practices in the hope of having her identified.

Police have now released this photo of the woman and also a dress ring she was wearing to help solve the mystery.

He said they were not conducting a criminal investigation but purely trying to find out where she resided and there were "no signs of elder abuse."

"We just want to reunite her with her family because we don't know who she is," he said.

"All the names that we have been provided, we are confident it is not them.

"We got an updated photograph and she was also wearing a ring that may be identified."

He said if anyone had fresh information or could identify the woman or the ring to contact police.
