Wide Bay: Nation's worst unemployment

IT LOOKS like the Wide Bay has the worst unemployment in Australia while Mackay has copped the worst from the mining downturn.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics regional unemployment figures for October have revealed the Wide Bay has the worst unemployment scale, followed by the nation's key coal regions.

The figures have revealed the Wide Bay region had an average monthly unemployment rate of 10.5 per cent, closely followed by the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

Mackay has been the hardest hit from the mining downturn.

Workers have fled the city and the unemployment rate has doubled from 3.8 per cent in 2013 to 7.6 per cent in October.

On the other end of the scale, the figures show almost 40,000 have been added to the workforce on the Gold Coast in the past two years as the tourism industry booms.

Despite lower wages, Australia's tourism industry is the light at the end of the mining doom and gloom tunnel.

Logan-Beaudesert, Townsville and Cairns also made it into the worst 15 regions in the nation.

Brisbane is at 5.9 per cent.
